MUA Spotlight: Meet the Woman behind Dolled Up Artistry, Caprice Dixon

Note from the Style Contributor, Jeanelly Concepcion

It must have been the warmest day this Winter in San Antonio when I met with Make-up Artist Caprice Dixon for lunch for our interview. We’d never met in person, but I had a feeling we’d click and it was instant. Caprice is a beautiful, talented and intelligent woman, whose main goal is to celebrate female beauty by empowering women to take beauty standards into their own hands. We talked family, our backgrounds, and a shared love of Janet Jackson. Most important, she shares how San Antonio is coming up as a power house in Fashion & Beauty and how she’s happy to be a part of the movement.

SLTV: How long have you been working as a Make-up Artist?
CD: I’ve been a Make-up Artist for about 10 years now.

SLTV: Did you start here in San Antonio?
CD: I actually started in Houston. I’m a San Antonio native but lived in Houston while attending college and worked at the MAC store in the Galleria Mall.

SLTV: What inspires you?
CD: I like to make women feel beautiful. It just makes me so happy when I’m able to enhance someone’s natural beauty. When they come to me and leave feeling even more beautiful it’s just the best feeling in the world.

SLTV: What are your favorite trends from 2015 and what do you predict for make-up trends in 2016?
CD: From 2015, the contour and bold lips were pretty big, but for 2016 I feel like we’re headed towards a more natural look. Light cheeks and matte finish. Great color for lips like plums, browns now in the Winter and I’m really feeling Peach and Coral for Spring ’16. My personal favorites are earth tones, but I really love Coral.

SLTV: What are you make-up/fashion Do’s?
CD: Compliment your clothing without going matchy matchy.

SLTV: What are you Make-up don’ts?
CD: Eyebrows! Overdrawn, too dark and overusing the highlight. That makes the brow look fake. I like the natural brow. A lot of women think they need to fill in with black because they have black hair, but you actually want to have it 2 tones lighter than your hair color.

SLTV: Thank you so much for that tip! I always feel so lost when it comes to filling out my brows. That helps me so much!

SLTV: What other tips or advice can you give us when it comes to applying our own make-up?
CD: BLENDING! Make sure you blend, blend, blend. When you’re trying to find the correct foundation, you can try the shade on your inner forearm or on your neck. You want to make sure that your face and neck match. Blending is the key. Whether the look is dramatic or more natural, just make sure you BLEND!

SLTV: Which Hollywood star or Musician is your muse?
CD: Well, I went to school in Houston, so I have to say Beyonce (laughs). She’s always so put together and she’s a trendsetter. I also, love Janet Jackson. She was a trendsetter with make-up, hair, and overall style. My favorite “Janet” look was in the 90’s for “That’s the way love goes”.

SLTV: What do think the future holds for the Fashion Community in San Antonio?
CD: I think San Antonio is coming up! At first it was very slow, see because I’m from here, so I’m just starting to see a lot of Fashion Designers, new boutiques and even a lot of people who are dressing up like if they’re in New York. We’re being more daring with fashion and make-up. I think we’re coming and putting San Antonio on the map!
