Is Diane Von Furstenberg leaving CFDA?

According to sources, Diane Von Furstenberg is ready to step down from her post as Chairwoman of the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Inc.. Having been named President of the organization in 2006, she has dedicated herself to fostering emerging talent and helping to establish the Design Piracy Prohibition Act, which protects designers from counterfeit reproductions of their work.

Founded in 1962, the Council of Fashion Designers of America, Inc. (CFDA) is a non-profit trade association whose membership consists of more than 500 of America’s foremost womenswear, menswear, jewelry and accessory designers. With a mission to strengthen the impact of American fashion in the global economy, who will now serve as the face of the organization?

Rumor has it, Tom Ford is leading the nominations.

Joining the ranks of Sydney Wragge, Stan Herman, Norman Norell, Oscar de la Renta, Herbert Kasper, Bill Blass, Mary McFadden, Perry Ellis and Carolyne Roehm; Ford is expected to bring a great deal to the organization after making such a strong name for himself. The Austin, Texas native has not only served as Creative Director for fashion houses Gucci and Yves Saint Laurent, but he has also bridged the gaps between fashion, music, and movies. Film director, screen writer and film producer can be added to his list of titles.

Inevitably, times are changing and Von Furstenberg echoed the sentiment.

“It’s beyond American fashion,” she said last year. “It’s that we live in such a fast-changing world. Everything — publishing, magazines closing, merging — it’s a very, very different scenery, and we are right in the middle of it. As an industry, it’s very important…that we all discuss it together and see how we can best help each other, but thinking that everybody has to do what is right for them.”

Stay tuned as we continue to follow the developing story. CFDA board members are expected to vote next Tuesday.
