SLTV: Cesar, it is so nice to finally catch  up! We know it’s been busy. For everyone who may be new to you and your brand, let’s start from the beginning. Where were you born? Tell us a bit about your upbringing.
CG: HOUSTON, TEXAS…first generation. My family is from Mexico and I am the youngest of 11 siblings.

SLTV: Where did you attain your fashion education?
CG: It’s a gift I was born with, no formal education. I learned my sewing and technical skills from my mother and I got my business sense from my father.

SLTV: When did you move to NY and how did that door open for you?
CG: OMG..I was making and selling designs when I was in jr high. The year was 1985, my senior year at Charles H. Milby High School in Houston. I dropped out.

A scout from NYC Invited me to participate in a Texas Designer showcase at the DANCETERIA, a famed NYC nightclub where Madonna was once the coatcheck girl. That was one of the first of many doors to open in my life.

SLTV:Wow, what a fun memory! Can you remember what you designed for the showcase?
CG:  I actually do remember. It was a very shoulder pad moment. Grace Jones ala AZZEDINE ALAIA meets Judy Jetson. Color and texture with lots of drama.
SLTV: Sounds fabulous to us!

SLTV: You have come such a long way. We are huge fans of your career. For all those who are new to you, can you list all the big brands and celebrities that you have designed for since then?
CG: Oh sure! Carmelo Pomodora, LAMB by Gwen Stefani, Calvin Klein women’s collection, LEVIS, Dolce & Gabanna, Madonna, Chaka Khan, Joan Jett, Justin Timberlake, Bette Middler, Jennifer Lopez, Wendy Williams, Grace Jones

And now the design director for KIMORA LEE SIMMONS collection.

SLTV: What have been some of your favorite moments in building your brand?
CG: I love the process of creative collaboration. I have been blessed with so many talented, like minded individuals that have supported my vision. The first NYFW show I did in my loft, where Bill Cunningham shot the images that were part of the review in WWD. My first show under the NYFW umbrella…with all the big brands.

SLTV: What challenges have you conquered that made you a better designer and business person?
CG: Cash flow. Figuring out how to sustain myself and the brand. Focus….and staying focused. Knowing when to start and stop creating and staying true to my vision.

SLTV: And now, the exciting news! KIMORA LEE SIMMONS! Spill.
CG: Haha… I am the new design director for the KIMORA LEE SIMMONS collection. Currently working on Resort 2020 and SPRING 2020. We are also planning our 2019 tours.
