05 Dec It’s out! Pantone Color of the Year 2020 is…
For over 20 years, PANTONE’s Color of the Year has influenced your daily life. Whether you realize or not, this mystical character of masterful impact will be seen in massive product development and billion dollar purchasing decisions in multiple industries, including fashion, home furnishings, industrial design, product packaging and graphic design.
The PANTONE Color of the Year selection process requires thoughtful consideration and trend analysis. To arrive at the selection each year, PANTONE’s color experts at the PANTONE Color Institute comb the world looking for new color influences. This can include the entertainment industry, traveling art collections, new artists, new art trends, fashion (of course) and all areas of design. Popular travel destinations and new lifestyle experiences, even playstyles, and socio-economic conditions can shift the trend forecasting of PANTONE to yield their color of the year. Influences may also stem from new technologies, materials, textures, relevant social media platforms and even upcoming sporting events that capture worldwide attention. So what has our world told PANTONE and what color will be sweeping our mentation this 2020?
Classic Blue. “A timeless and enduring blue hue, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue is elegant in its simplicity. Suggestive of the sky at dusk with reassuring qualities of the thought-provoking. PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue highlight our desire for a dependable and stable foundation on which to build as we cross the threshold into a new era.” Says Pantone.
Imprinted in our psyches as a restful color, PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue brings a sense of “peace and tranquility to the human spirit, offering refuge. Aiding concentration and bringing laser like clarity. PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue re-centers our thoughts. A reflective blue tone, Classic Blue fosters resilience.”
So why the need for more tranquil days? Perhaps the rise of “anxiety” as a human condition. Perhaps the pressures of social media falsely manipulating our sense of self worth. Perhaps the doom that has been lingering over our political climate, daily news settling in the pit of our sour stomachs. Perhaps even more. It’s no secret that the condition of “unease” has infested our American existence for some years now. Through it all, new medications have popped up, new detox and diet crazes, new exercise equipment and many other vices to escape, “binge” or “chill” have surfaced in order to make money off of us seeking the “refuge” we so desperately need.
Still, there is a sense of hope in this new color. 2020 as a number itself, brings forth a sense of new beginnings, a sense of wiping the slate clean. We gaze at our color of the year and choose to focus on the crossing of “the threshold into a new era”, an Ultimate Happy New Year cheer! A primary color such as blue represents a settling into our default. A sort of reset button. Starting from the beginning with something that is proven, stable, strong reliable and sets the foundation for so many other possibilities. Now that is something we could absolutely embrace.
“As technology continues to race ahead of the human ability to process it all, it is easy to understand why we gravitate to colors that are honest and offer a promise of protection. Non-aggressive and easily relatable, the trusted PANTONE 19-4052 Classic Blue lends itself to relaxed interaction. Associated with the return of another day, this universal favorite is comfortably embraced.”
