02 Apr Finding a model agency that’s right for you. Where to start your search in Texas.
We’re doing a lot of internet searching these days, including how to keep ourselves busy creatively and prioritizing our future professional goals. If you’ve ever wondered how to get started in the fashion industry, you’ll find this post helpful. Also, if you are interested in Texas agencies, we’ve gathered a list for you to research and stay up-to-date with casting calls.
Do your research.
So you’re interested in being a model, singer or actor but don’t know were to begin? Start with doing research in your local area. Do a search for local talent agencies and get as specific as possible. Google search is a great start, but you may need to utilize some social media platforms such as Facebook and Instagram. While doing your research, keep in mind your level of experience and expectations. Read the “About” section of each business, as well as their reviews. Don’t be afraid to make phone calls to try to speak with someone who has been represented by the agency directly. Take notes of their requirements and upcoming casting calls. Do they have open casting calls? What will you need to send them if you are interested?
Requirements vary from agency-to-agency and knowing what you’ll need is essential in getting seen and heard. Most agencies require you to email your full name, a few photos, measurements, age, hair color, eye color, and contact information. Some may ask for an initial face to face. Don’t forget to specify your talent such as modeling, acting, singing, etc. Be sure to submit the correct photos they are seeking. Would they like editorial or natural, clean and minimalistic photos? Most agencies require a natural headshot and full body photo at first. Since we live in a digital world, they may ask you for your social media accounts to view your body of work. Be sure to read each website carefully before submitting your inquiry.
Follow up and network.
Agencies get busy, so don’t forget to follow up. If you submit an inquiry at the beginning of the week, it is okay to follow up with an email or call before the end of the week. If you happen to catch them with a phone call, this a great opportunity to express your interest, share a little of your personality and future goals as well as receive any helpful feedback they may have with your profile. Another important step in finding an agency you’re interested in is networking. Get to know the professional community you are vetting. Join like minded groups, follow social media profiles and get to know who’s who in the industry. One great networking group is the Texas Fashion Industry Initiative 501(c)(3) non-profit group. TFII is a diverse group of fashion industry professionals with many years of experience in their respective fields. Becoming a member of TFII will link you with many Texas fashion professionals and keep you in the know of opportunities yearly, including TEXAS FASHION WEEK™ in October of every year.
