SLTV: Thank you for chatting with us today. We have followed your career with lots of love. How did you get into styling? Tell us your beginning.
MW: Some accomplishments are not an overnight success, it has taken me years. I was born, raised, and educated in Texas (my world travel later became a benefit of my fashion industry career). I went to NYC right after I graduated from Baylor University in fashion design. I worked for different noteworthy design labels with the intention of working in fashion as a designer. Having pursued design for a while and learning about all the different jobs and responsibilities in the fashion industry, my interest changed. I thought I wanted to pursue being a designer, but the close collaboration with creative teams satisfied my interest in fashion design and created my love of styling. The life of a Stylist is not easy (really exhausting), but I never get tired of the finished product at the end of the day.

SLTV: When styling for a shoot, what inspires you the most?
MW: I’m mostly inspired by the early work of Grace Coddington. Grace’s overall remarkable 50 years of fashion contribution is always an inspiration to me. She is a former model and former creative director of Vogue magazine. Coddington is known for the creation of large, complex and dramatic photoshoots. She has produced some of fashion’s most memorable imagery; an inspirational creative odyssey of decadence that brings art and fashion together.

SLTV: Can you tell us your most memorable makeover or style session? What do you think made that moment for your client so significant.
MW: One of my celebrity shoots from my portfolio brings back one of many memories. The celeb actress had super tall stilettos, as she cross-stepped…I could see her in slow motion falling in the $10,000 gown I dressed her in. I dove to the floor like a baseball player sliding to home-base, breaking her fall just in time…Wheeeew!

MW: Texas has a great fashion future ahead, full of jobs and economic growth. I look forward to Texas being a fashion industry competitor to be reckoned with.
MW: Yes, EXACTLY! It’s easy to feel helpless in the midst of an uncontrollable situation. Twenty-four hours and seven days a week of non-stop negative news is not living. I lived in NYC when 9/11 occurred and lived through what first hand statewide depression felt like; not a single media outlet would allow for a moment of escape. Our current situation presented the right time to generate a positive outlook during dark times via the fashion industry. People know our names and the clothes, but not what makes us laugh or how much we will fight for our quality of life one designer mask at a time!
SLTV: WOW! We are going to keep our eyes peeled for that! Congratulations on all you’ve accomplished and good luck on what’s to come!
