Style Lush TV Beauty Show – Ep.7 The Holy Mother of Makeup Divine Intervention Eyeshadow Palette

Many of you out there can probably relate; things never really slowed down for me this year. I did not have the luxury of couch surfing or rekindling with some downtime in the midst of this novel pandemic. Things went straight into maneuvering the circumstances and reinventing our strategies which called for a “wake up and makeup” approach in a world now dependant on Zoom conference calls.

It’s been half a year now, and I have to say, having the rug swept from under us not only put my companies on a new path of unplanned reinvention, but it also put my personal life on a new path as well. Now although I won’t be leaving the fashion industry anytime soon, a sudden invitation to join the board of the San Antonio Street Art Initiative launched me into a third industry a little earlier than anticipated. You see, it was always my long-term goal to experience three industries in my career’s lifetime. Ideally, this was the plan of a very young and bright-eyed Burgundy Woods:

Age 20s-30s, Hollywood Music Industry. Check.

 

Age 30s-40s, Fashion Industry. Double Check.

 

Age 40s-50s, Art Industry….. well… here we go.

Today I am 39 1/2, now side hustling in the Art Industry and I’m loving every minute of it.


20s-30s, Hollywood Music Industry reference: Yours truly straight-up cheesin’ at Capitol Records. This among many other Hollywood record labels was my early career dream job come true.

As this year chugs along, my fashion companies are taking their second-largest financial hit in their existence. (Been there. Done that. Not scared. We’ll bounce back.) So the financial opportunities that my side hustle at the San Antonio Street Art Initiative has opened up for me were not only fun but also necessary. Currently, my fashion companies are using the remainder of the year to apply for grants and plan strong for next year, my side hustle has dropped a new creative revenue stream of website design in my lap and I’m now also indulging in the incredibly rewarding task of project coordination for many, many street art murals around San Antonio, Texas.


30s-40s, Fashion Industry Reference: My very, very first fashion job while attending FIDM, as the design assistant for laundry by Shelli Segal day dress department in Los Angeles, California. Later I would work as Trend Forecaster and star on the shopping channel for MySpace, Inc. and then on to 2010 and my current dream job as, Editor in Cheif for Style Lush TV, then President of the Texas Fashion Industry Initiative.

Our current biggest project right now is still a bit of a secret, but what I can say is that we are opening up the newest street art mural gallery in town and advocating for local artists and their talent. It will be inside a new larger art space in the heart of Downtown, San Antonio created by a very cool private company. All of this excitement, however, has got me thinking about fashion, especially in the midst of our current circumstances. If this pandemic has proven anything its that fashion is a massive part of the human experience, especially with social events, our chosen weekend functions, or our personal offtime activities. All of this has me wondering, what will all of this look like come opening reception time? 


This, and so many other wonderful experiences coming to a new spot in San Antonio, Texas.

I find myself pondering what the grand opening will look like in the midst of COVID-19. Obviously more cautious, safer, a lot more social rules to launch out to the public beforehand, and yes, let’s talk about the public for that matter. What will that be like? It will be way fewer people in attendance I’m sure. Not for lack of interest of course, but for the sheer restrictions we as human beings have right now on grand events. Where does this leave us in the midst of our situation and where does that leave fashion? Like I said, this situation has just got me thinking…

I feel really guilty for saying this but, I can’t help but get excited about the grand opening, even if it is a restricted version of what it would have normally been. That being said I’m also really nervous. I don’t want to break any social rules, definitely don’t want to catch COVID-19, but I can’t help but get butterflies at the idea of celebrating a massively wonderful achievement and contribution to our community, and doing it outside of my house for the first time in almost a year!


40s-50s, Art Industry Reference: Although I am still in the fashion industry, my third career goal of entering the art industry has entered my life a year early. I am 39 and on the board of the coolest non-profit for public art in San Antonio, the San Antonio Street Art Initiative.

Also, I admit it; I’m anxious to dress up.

After living in a sea of band tees for months, I’d love to indulge in some fashion and be around other creative human beings who are also fashionable, even if it means only being around a hand full of people, probably mostly us artists, six or more feet away, in a world of something new. San Antonio needs a lot more “new” a lot more often. It is what makes a city feel like a “big city”, and this is something very new and I can’t help but be excited.

For “fashion people”, fashion plays a huge part in finding joy. There’s a certain high that fashion brings to our daily lives, and even more so when we actually have a reason to “dress up”. The timeless, excited panting of “What am I going to wear?” comes to mind.

In the midst of COVID-19, leaving the house has proven to be a massive part of personal style, but that too has raised the question, “If leaving the house is no longer a thing, and personal style is meant to communicate who you are to others, does Style even exist right now?” Some people say “No,” that style exists only when other people can see it and experience it. Some say, “Yes”, that style is meant for you, and you only. Other people’s attention and compliments are just an added bonus.” One thing all of us fashion enthusiasts can agree on, however, is this,

“Fashion brings much joy, in not only knowing you have fashionable reasons to leave the house but in also knowing you are leaving the house fashionable.”

Make sense? It does to us.


Band Tees Life #2: @BurgundyWoods

I personally miss the ritualistic routine of artistically creating an outfit in my mind. The analysis of clothing mood vs. event environment. The pleasure of seeing a creative mental picture come to life in a flat lay on my bed. The evolving joy it brings when the mental picture comes to life on my body IRL. The thrill of trying a new hairdo to go with my well thought out vibe and the fun of choosing the makeup that will set the perfect exclamation mark behind the fashion statement I’ve created. It’s now September, and although this pandemic took many newfound business owners by surprise, the resiliency of this woman, her team, and her brand, Holy Mother of Makeup, is nothing short of inspiring. Pre-sales for The Divine Intervention Collection began this past April at HolyMotherOfMakeup.Com to a very anxious array of fans and consumers. Then in May, a full launch hit social media with a heartfelt campaign highlighting 14 women, each sharing their brief statement about their Latina pride, followed by the motto, “Soy Latina”, a beautiful mantra encouraged by the brand as an embodiment of the owner, the company’s culture, and the consumers who resonated with this movement. Today, the brand is still on fire, selling through its online channels and gaining momentum, even with the pandemic still raging on.

A standout product launched was the Holy Mother of Makeup Divine Intervention Eyeshadow Palette. If it weren’t for this eyeshadow palette this year, I would be so incredibly bored this quarantine. The packaging alone was an unexpected pick me up, dawing the message “I am enough” on its exterior, then when opened, the array in colors in this palette was by far, the perfect arsenal of every color that I could have ever possibly needed right now. From perfect shades of daywear to more dramatic tones for fun, this palette has every color combo needed to have perfect face, for my many, many zoom calls and our inevitable grand opening reception coming up later this year.

This will call for Masks Up everyone! And yes, speaking of MASK UP, right now, the only thing that really matters is your eyes, am I right? When you step out for essentials in all your mask glory, out no one really cares what lipstick you are wearing, nor could they even see it if you were wearing any at all (although many of us wear it anyway). This eyeshadow palette comes with 15 different pots, and endless possible combinations. I’ve had a really fun time mixing and matching tones, coloring, and combining shades, and with the helpful layout of the pots, I can easily create timeless eyeshadow looks. I also found it really fun to invent more complex color combos myself and experiment without fear.

I’m still on the fence about how I will do my eyes at our street art gallery’s opening reception, but I still have some time to experiment and draw inspiration from the outfit and mask I wear.
