When Fashion and Dance join forces. See the latest creative project by award-winning fashion-artist, Fabian Diaz.

Fabian Diaz is an award-winning fashion-artist from Texas with a large number of celebrated projects, clients, and commissions that seek his talented hand in hair and makeup as well as his one-of-a-kind, handmade fashion-art for music videos and editorial. We sat down with Fabian to gain some insight into his most recent project, a photoshoot with Jackleen Rios, a Dance Director at The Jewel of Art Dance Studio. The objective? How do you combine the art of Dance with the art of Avant-Garde Fashion, some neon lighting, and still make it a statement about Jackie’s new dance company? Here’s what the duo had to say and just a few of the incredible photos that came out of this project.

SLTV: Fabian, we know you are highly sought after in the music video, film, and editorial world, but how did your talents hook up with a Dance Studio?
FD: I have known Jackie for years through mutual friends. I’ve also been doing her hair for a while now, both cuts and colorwork. She was a dance teacher at a school when I met her, and now she has her own studio.
JR: Fabian and I have known each other for many years and wanted to collaborate his artistic headpieces, creative direction on a dancer’s bodily movement, and create a new perspective through a dancer’s eyes.

SLTV: What was the artistic direction?
FD: I was inspired by an editorial I saw on Instagram. But of course, had to do it my own way. And Jackie, she is all about anything that sparkles, so covering her with glitter just seemed right, haha.
JR: As a dancer, Dance is when I feel I am able to Shine the most. When I perform and look out into the audience, it is such a freeing feeling, seeing all the lights, sparkle, and brilliance from the spectators as I get to do what I love. I believe this shoot symbolizes the avant-garde story through a dancer’s eyes, incorporating creative headpieces and style with a dancer’s body and movement.

SLTV: Fabian, can you tell us what you handmade on the shoot? Everyone always loves the breakdown of your creativity.
FD: I took an old wig I had, cut it into a bob, and spray painted it. I then painted on the glitter. So it was basically a helmet because the paint dried hard. For her outfit, Jackie is wearing a silver bodysuit and silver boots, and I used a tinsel table skirt from Hobby Lobby, for the “fringe” on top. I also used tinsel garlands in several colors.

SLTV: Talk to us about how Dance and Fashion relate to one another? We would love to hear your perspectives.
JR: Dance and fashion both have a sense of self artistic expression. Both allow creative freedom, individuality, and Inspiration.
FD: Yes, I agree with Jackie in that both Dance and Fashion are ways to express one’s self and can be inspired by one another creatively. Has anybody out there ever put on that perfect outfit, and it just made you feel so fly, that had to just do a little dance? I know I have.
