Vintage Accessories for Modern Days. Get to know Crystal Martinez and her new shop, Clásica.

Crystal Martinez has always been a unique and mesmerizing talent. Behind her quiet demeanor and gorgeous pin-straight hair, lies an old soul, radiating sultry eyes, reminiscent of Grace Kelly, with an instinct for vintage that is unparalleled. It is my belief that she has attended many Great Gatsby parties in a past life, and in yet another past life, lived among the most elegant of art deco luxury. On the other hand, getting to know her upbringing and edgy exposure to MTV (when it was cool), it’s evident that this too played a role in developing her unique eye for today. Together, her past (lives) and present, collaborate to create something new in her now, that radiates something modern generations of today have long forgotten about during their rush for something quick and superficial… Taste.

Taste. A quality that some have shunned aside to give way to casualness and fast fashion. Taste. Something that feels a little bit rare in a world filled with chaos and constant turbulence. Still, there are those artists and creatives that find the beauty in the littlest of things, and vintage curators, in particular, are some of life’s most beautiful unsung heroes in fashion. They find new life in items that others have written off as dead, they fountain-of-youth “old” fashion by styling pieces in modern ways, they mother orphaned treasures and find new homes for them in like-minded fashion enthusiasts. In turn, vintage curators percolate a magic by passing their misfit heirlooms on to its next romantic generation who understands that pieces go well beyond a superficial meaning in fashion. They are a lifeforce waiting for their next big breath of fresh air.

For those seeking quality that will sustain the test of time, Clásica was born for you, and you, you may be the next owner of some of the most beautifully curated trinkets in Texas. Keep reading on to discover mysteriously traveled fashion and your next fashion obsession, where old meets new, and forward fashion becomes Clásica.

Although Clásica’s Instagram is new, this grid packs incredible eye-candy, so we sat down with the business’s owner to gain a little behind-the-scenes info and to ask a list of dreamy questions that this has launch inspired. Sit back, grab your tea set, and let’s talk vintage.

SLTV: Hi Crystal! We are so excited to see the return to your vintage curation roots. This time around, it looks like you’ve taken things to a whole new level. Tell us, who is Clásica?
CM: Clásica is an ode to the classics. It was created from a belief that the timelessness and femininity of vintage can be modern and chic.

SLTV: What is Clásica’s background in vintage and what is it about the periods and decades that draw you?
CM: I grew up watching MTVs headbangers ball because my mom’s a rocker. I also watched fashion shows on TV because my mom is also feminine under all that rocker. I like to think that this introduction into these very different worlds shaped my love for fashion and gave me a good understanding of how it is transcendent. As my passion for all things fashion grew, I consistently picked up and learned anything I could about fashion. I have one very distinct memory of vintage shopping. My family was waiting to be seated at a local restaurant and while we waited we decided to pop in on a shop across the street. It was called Jive Refried. It was a vintage shop. I remember feeling as if though I was in wonderland. There were these two huge cats and a talkative man behind the counter with big glasses telling us about his shop and how he had some special pieces he reworked. Everywhere I looked there was something I was intrigued by and some story he could tell us to relate to the piece. We walked out that day with one of his reworked pieces and I felt as though I had a piece of what was going down the runways in the fashion shows I used to watch as a kid. It was wild and there was so much imagination put into the piece. I’d never seen anything like it. I think the visit into this lil shop is where vintage fashion became near and dear to my heart. I fell in love with the storytelling, the history that came with it. The history made it unique and that uniqueness felt exclusive. I’ve now been collecting pieces here and there for about 20 years. I believe fashion repeats itself always, in some way or another. So vintage, it’s always relevant and always in style. It’s the new, new.
SLTV: This is such a niche and unique concept, what motivated you to create Clásica? Was there a gap in this market?
CM: I was inspired to create clásica because I wanted to create a space that sold and promoted quality vintage in a way that makes it feel modern, while still providing a piece that’s exclusive, one-of-a-kind and with a story to tell. Vintage jewelry lasts for decades as the quality is superb. I wanted to share this magic with others because they just don’t make jewelry like this anymore. The pieces are intricate and worthy of attention so I also wanted to promote them this way. Clásica should feel exclusive and very different from a thrift experience. From picking the perfect piece online to opening up the box at home, our customers should feel they’ve acquired something special.
SLTV: YES! I could not agree more! Additionally, these quality pieces promote sustainability, which is so, so important right now. Love this.

SLTV: How do you find and curate your pieces?
CM: I started collecting by attending estate sales but found that by staying local I mostly found the same styles. After some research, I eventually branched out to state shows and met people from New York, South Carolina, and Florida who I am now able to source through. I mostly look for pieces that are classic and very feminine but keep a constant eye out for iconic statement and glamourous pieces. I find that I favor the 60s and 80s. The pieces from these eras are just so magical and statement-making. They’re bold but in a very feminine and soft way. Above everything, the first rule is I never break is, the piece must still shine. Quality is everything and nothing we carry is to be overly tarnished.
