Get To Know PSMBS: How We Can Use Fashion To Empower Our Minds And Soul.

Everyone has their insecurities whether it be physical or mental struggles. We all need encouragement in these hard times we’re living in. Luckily, people like Angelique Atwell come into our life with a strong heart and ambitious mission to help spread the word on the importance of self-love and self-care. It all began with a blog used as an empowerment platform but quickly turned into a brand and foundation for what would be the helping force to so many individuals. Sometimes, it truly is the little things in life: a t-shirt, a happy worded mug, the little things, that can help brighten your day. Sometimes, items that can help switch your mindset so quickly are so swiftly overlooked. Fashion, for instance, can truly help to empower our minds if only we let it in, in a positive way.
We got the opportunity to chat with San Antonio native and founder of Plus Sized Mind, Body Soul (PSMBS), Angelique Atwell on the importance of self-care and how her brand is working to help others through empowerment. Here is what she had to say.
SLTV: Let’s begin by introducing you to our readers! What led to creating PSMBS?
AA: My name is Angelique Atwell and I am the owner/founder of PSMBS (plus-sized mind, body, soul). I am 27 years young and I am married with a beautiful 2-year-old little boy. I am a native of San Antonio and love this city so much! I received my B.A. in Business Marketing from UIW.
I started PSMBS back in 2018 as a beauty/wellness/empowerment blog but after only a few short months I stopped using the blog as I soon found out I was pregnant and about to be very busy. Come 2020 and the pandemic, I was suddenly inspired to bring back some light and joy in the form of graphic t-shirts with some positive messages. As a working mom, realizing that self-care and self-love were extremely important to my mental health and overall well-being, it was a no-brainer when I decided, that would be the foundation of my brand.
SLTV: Self-care and self-love. What do you think is most important when starting this journey for people? What advice would you give someone who is struggling with this?
AA: Self-care and self-love are very broad subjects but I actually love that. Everyone has a different way of practicing self-care and self-love. By far the most important thing is getting real with yourself and being honest about what you need and what makes you happy, or at a minimum, keeps you sane. Your body will tell you what it needs. Also, being ready for it to not always be pretty or easy. Sometimes being honest with yourself is the toughest part but that’s when self-discovery happens and you can move forward.
For someone who is struggling with these two topics (which most definitely intertwine) the best advice I can give is to start small and be kind to yourself. This is a journey, not a destination.
For self-care: sit with yourself and figure out, what would help me feel recharged? That could be rest, working out, catching up with an old friend, doing a favorite hobby, etc. What lights my soul on fire? When am I at my happiest? And work to implement these things one day at a time back into your life where you can. Just like our first collection says “self-care isn’t selfish” because if you don’t take care of yourself, you won’t be able to show up as your best self in your life. Remember, put your oxygen mask on first before you can help anyone else!
Self-love: very similarly, sit with yourself and do your best to recognize where and when do I feel my best? What do I feel I am lacking? And why might I be feeling this way? With self-love, a great practice I have done myself is every day usually in the morning I will stand in the mirror and point out one thing I like about myself. It doesn’t have to be physical it could be “I am strong and I like that” or “I like my determination” and continue that every day even it is only one thing until it becomes a subconscious thought. At the end of the day, you have to go home with yourself every day and wake up to yourself. So life would be so much easier if you stopped fighting yourself and started fighting for yourself. I do want to mention, if you are feeling as though it is impossible to push through the tough thoughts and emotions, seeking therapy of some form is highly suggested as not everything can be worked through on our own. Nothing wrong with asking for help! It in fact is a form of self-love when practicing self-advocacy!
SLTV: That was all great advice! I’m sure that your words and the clothing that you come out with inspires so many! What is your mission with PSMBS and what do you hope to achieve with each of your items?
AA: My mission for PSMBS is to create timeless, classic items that can be worn year-round and stand true through the years. Each saying is meant to serve as a reminder to the person wearing it but also to those around them. Whether that be a phrase about self-love, empowerment, self-care, etc. I want anyone wearing a PSMBS piece to feel like they are also positively impacting those around them to be their best selves.
SLTV: Your products all share important messages. What inspires each slogan on your pieces?
AA: Each slogan is inspired by different experiences in my life but also from those around me that have shared their stories. From feeling guilty for taking a day off or spending money on themselves. Not feeling adequate in their jobs or not feeling adequate in their lives; all of these things have helped inspire these slogans because I know if one person feels this way there has got to be plenty of others who feels the same. I am genuinely happy with helping, even if it’s helping just one person feel as though they are not alone in their journey.
In these always-changing times, we love seeing small businesses evolve with purpose, and that is exactly what this inspiring brand has done with their mission and encouraging designs. We have fallen in love with the mission of PSMBS and we hope that using Atwell’s encouraging words and designs is just the beginning of your self-love journey.
