Denim has been and always will be an important staple piece in a wardrobe. Different styles come and go but one thing stays the same, denim is timeless. Patty Toms understands this and has decided to create a brand where timeless meets modern. Dawning the expression “Love Messages That Have Your Back”, this brand offers simple sayings that help express your individuality paired with timeless denim pieces, once-forgotten at your local thrift store. What stands out the most about this new brand is that this is not just a one-woman show. Toms shares this entrepreneurial journey with the biggest inspirations in her life, her mom and her grandmother. Sincerely put, this brand is “Mija, Madre, & Abuelita” owned, all three playing a role in creating this family business.
Currently, her pieces with quirky and bold messages are seeing rapid growth in San Antonio, because of this, we got to know all about Pep Talk Society through an interview where we delve deeper into the brand and their messages of positivity and self-expression.
SLTV: Let us begin by introducing you and your brand to our readers. What led you to create Pep Talk Society?
PT: I’m Patty Toms and I am from San Antonio, TX. I was raised here, left at 18 years old, moved to Austin,TX for 6 years, and then moved to Oklahoma for 16 years. I came back to SATX 4 years ago and I am so happy to be home.
I created Pep Talk Society due to getting my mental wellness aligned with who I know I am. The book “Burnout: The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle” by Amelia Nagoski and Emily Nagoski was my saving grace during a very difficult time. One of the exercises is creative expression. It may be cliche but messages, quotes, music lyrics, poems, one-liner advice, old sayings, etc. inspire me and have changed my life. The impact of words are powerful.  I know how it makes me feel when I wear “my message” for the day and the impact it has on my psyche, and I want to share that. I am a natural creative and these two things went hand-in-hand.
SLTV: “Love messages that have your back” I love this! What inspires you for each piece?
PT: If it makes me smile, has a story, ruffles a few feathers, feels like an inside joke, or speaks to a very specific niche of people, then it inspires me. My Abuelita and Mom are my biggest inspiration with the backstory of “love messages that have your back”. They are my source of love and they continue to fill my life with words of inspiration. While this may seem sugary sweet, don’t get it twisted; I love cuss words and messages that might make certain parents want to cover their kid’s eyes if they are reading a message on a piece.

SLTV: We love the mixture of sweet and spicy you’re bringing! We noticed that you are focusing on denim pieces for your launch. Why did you decide on denim?
PT: This is simple. Denim is universal. Denim is classic. Denim doesn’t have a label of gender on it. Denim can be paired with anything style-wise. Choosing this was a no-brainer for my brand. With that being said though, I’d love to expand to coffee mugs, stickers, denim baseball caps, and denim fanny packs.
SLTV: What has drawn me to PTS is that it’s a joint effort with all of the most important women in your life. Was this an important factor when deciding on this launch?
PT: This was a huge deciding factor when I thought about what I wanted to do in order to take care of my mental wellness. I knew I wanted to get back to being creative and this made sense to me. I spoke with my Abuelita and Mom and told them what I was doing, why I was doing it, and how I wanted their presence and support. They didn’t hesitate and said, “Okay, tell us what to do; let’s do this.” My Abuelita thrifts with me, my Mom gets logistics in order, and we all paint.
SLTV: As a Latina entrepreneur, what is one thing that you have been challenged with in terms of starting PTS?
PT: In all honesty … not being “Latina” enough for the Latina community. I don’t speak fluent Spanish, I don’t have a distinct accent, and I don’t “look” the part according to stereotypes. I grew up not being fully accepted by the Latina community and it did a number on my mental wellness in regard to being a “Proud Latina”. I am 42 years old, and it wasn’t until I was 39 years old that I finally felt accepted and stood firm in being a very Proud Latina Woman. I started sharing my story about being a Latina woman who was ostracized by fellow Latina’s growing up and more and more fellow Latina’s started to share their similar stories here in San Antonio, and I didn’t feel alone anymore. It gave me the strength to speak out about it, and to feel secure about calling myself a “Proud Latina”.
SLTV: What is the impact you hope PTS leaves on people?
PT: One thing! When you put on your Pep Talk Society piece and wear your love message for the day, that you not only have a pep in your step for the day but that a stranger feels that same pep by reading the message you are wearing, and it has a double impact.
Get a pep in your step this season with the fabulous designs of Pep Talk Society, but beyond that, remember that there is a message in what you wear. If it brings you purpose and makes you smile, then fashion has done its job. Follow Pep Talk Society’s INSTAGRAM for even more inspiration and event more upcycled style.
